Genre Decision Blog
While I have been analyzing the components of many different genres in the filming industry I have came to a decision for the genre I will use for my opening sequence. The genre in which I will be doing for my opening sequence is the horror genre. I choose this genre because it provides me with a lot of creative opportunity in every component in the filming industry. I came to this decision after watching horror films and analyzing the different aspects that are contributed into the storytelling of a horror film. Horror films also allow me to focus on the components of filming that I've been improving upon all year. The special effects that you can add into a horror film to create that eerie and ominous filming that leaves the audience on the edge of their seat just peaks my interest.
While the action genre also sparked my interest because of the different camera angles like that are used to tell a story. The camera angles that are commonly used in action films are those that I have become confident in throughout the progression of the course. So I would be in my comfort zone filming an action opening sequence since I have used those same camera angles in my other projects. Although I am familiar with those angles I want to explore something new. So I decided to pass up on something that I would have found pretty easy for something that would give me more of a challenge.
The romance genre never really caught my attention when I was selecting a genre for the opening sequence. While there are some different camera movements that are commonly used that I would like to incorporate into opening sequence. One of the camera movements that are commonly used in the romance genre that I would like to use in the dolly or tracking shot. For at least one portion of my opening sequence to show character interaction with their environment. Along with the use of non diegetic and diegetic sound queues. So that while the audience is watching the opening sequence they can feel the emotions associated with the film. For example if a someone where being followed a more up tempo sound would be playing so that the audience can feel the discomfort and eeriness that would be felt by the character.
So as a result of being interested in different angles and movements than I haven't used in previous projects I choose to go with the horror genre. Which includes camera angles like over-the-shoulder and the canted shot with the camera movements being reverse shot, tilt, and tracking shot. While also using a different editing technique where I can incorporate hallucinations.
