Genre Research: Horror

Horror films are designed to scare the audience and inflict certain emotions into them. The different aspects when it comes filming and editing horror has been investigated. To see what really goes into making a horror film pop out at an audience. For starters, the common lighting used in horror films is low lighting. It creates a mysterious mood that builds tension, stress, and fear. So that the audience will stay on their toes never knowing when something will pop out to scare them. Frequently used camera shots includes close-up shots, over-the-shoulder shots, low angle shots, high angle shots, and canted angle shots. These draw the audience's attention and contributes to their thoughts on the context of the storyline. Mostly used in scenes where the entity in which is portrayed as horrifying is on screen causing havoc.

There are many different editing and sound elements that contribute to a horror film. Some include special effects in which leaves the audience scared of what they are seeing as they threaten the main characters of the film. Suspenseful music in which leaves the audience with suspicion as to what may happen next whether it be a jump scare or just a simple transition between two scenes.  Acting in which actors portray as someone or something that frightens viewers and makes them feel the same way as the actor. Costumes, makeup, props, and the setting are very important in horror films without all those components there is no way that a character can be created in which the audience will fear when they appear on screen.

The different camera angles that also take part in scaring the audience in horror films are pan movements, tilt, track, zoom, and reverse zoom. Also, Steadicams and cranes are used to create a certain movement for a shot. Without these movements, the audience wouldn't feel the emotions they should usually feel during a scary movie or show when someone is being chased or taken out of the picture. Some of the films in the horror genre that use these conventions are Truth or Dare, Insidious The Last Key, and The Nun.

I like most of the components that are introduced in a horror film I feel as if they make a film interesting especially, because when you put all these components you are always left at the edge of your seat wondering what will happen next. Some of the components that I would like to incorporate into my own film are the unique costumes and makeup that are used and the special effects that used to display things like paranormal entities or hallucinations. The components that I don’t really like about horror films are some of the different camera movements that are used in horror films for example the crane shot I don’t think I would use it when making a horror film, because I want to keep the audience up close to the actors.
