Production Blog: Putting the Puzzle Pieces in Place

Today was the first day of editing after the long filming process. The first step I did before fully starting the editing process was making sure that I got the best of every scene. Then I made sure that the editing software that I was going to use had all the contents I needed to create a good-looking music video. I knew I wouldn't have the time to finish it in one day, so I broke it down into two days. On the first day I would do scenes 1-7 because these were the scenes that had a lot of character movement and involved a lot of editing. On the second day I will edit scenes 8 through 12 because scene these scenes had little to no character movement so they would require much less editing to complete. Scene number 7 will be done on the first day because this is a moving shot transitioning into the first mid shot of the music video so I want to make sure everything flows correctly off this scene previous scenes so I know exactly how it will look up until scene 8.

When I first started, I was super excited because all the scenes looked good before so editing so I was only imagining what they would look like with edits. As time passed though that feeling of excitement slowly flowed away from me. It started because I was making a lot of mistakes with the driveway scene and the scene where the car is driving away from the 1st location in the music video. At some points I got frustrated because I couldn't figure out how to work certain parts of the music video together after long amounts of time. So, I took a short break because I didn't want to put something together that I wouldn't like to look back on and say I did a good job especially because music is a huge part of life and I put a lot of effort into the planning and execution. I used that break time to reflect and open my mind to how I was going to complete this edit without stressing out and I figured it out. I popped my headphones in started moving and grooving and before I knew it, I had completed the scenes that I had assigned myself to complete.

After I edited the clips, I added the selected song to the video to see if the actions fit the words. This took some time because I wanted to make sure that the audio matched up exactly with what was happening in the song even if that meant I had to cut little parts of the video away. Once the adjustments that needed to be made were made, I let everything render out then came back to the video. After that I reviewed the scenes that I had edited so far to make sure that there were no points in the scenes that I didn't want to be there. I managed to find some rough patches in the work I had completed and touched them up. I was really satisfied with the work I was able to complete after touching everything up especially after the frustration I went through along the way. Although I am ready to see how the final product comes out, because I think that today’s editing was pretty good.
