Genre Research: Hereditary

The three key components in which make a horror film one of the best in the industry is the element of surprise, an ambient soundtrack that strikes fear into the audience and a frightening menace. This movie exhibited all three of these elements in the most perfect way possible. The storyline and plot were simple and to the point. While this is still true the sound used added thrill and exhilaration you would want in a powerful horror film. That leaves the audience craving more screenplay towards the end of the film. It already has their attention as it continues to draw the audience in deeper into the perspective of the main character.

Hereditary played the use of camera angles to perfection at all times of the film. The first being high angles in which made the entity in which the audience could not see seem as almighty compared to those of the main characters in the film. Later, in the film an extreme close-up shot is used to capture the horror that is left on the characters face without displaying what has caused such fear. This is done a lot across the film creating a feeling of discomforting as the audience is left in the unknown about what is to come next on screen. High and low angles were used as characters approached staircases hoping not to be confronted by what was lurking in the home.

Making it seem as if the living characters played very little part in comparison as to that of the entity that haunted the house.

The film also uses CGI to a maximum to create heart wrenching figures at certain points intime that leave the audience wonder what they are seeing at that point in time. The constant revealing of subtle but plot altering information kept the audience on their toes. Which left the audience wondering what will come next in the plot of the story even when they though were next to come.

Some of the components that I would like to incorporate into my own film are the unique costumes and makeup that are used and the special effects that used to display things like paranormal entities or hallucinations. Alongside the detailed storytelling that came alongside the film. Other than that, out of all the horror films in which I have analyzed I think this is the film with the components in which I value the least. While the films plot was constantly developing telling an interesting story about the past and future of the main character. I felt bored throughout the film at certain points in time but I will like to incorporate some of the concept into my own work.
