Genre Research: The Quiet Place
This time around I wanted to analyze a film that was more unique and incorporated something that was never done before in a horror film. Using barely any character dialogue thought the course of the film which made the film just that much scarier. With no sound too dictate when something will pop out at you the film is made 3 times scarier than the traditional horror film. Creating a monster that can hear even the smallest if sounds reacting in mere minutes and wipe out anyone. Which I will be looking deeper into as I analyze the quiet place and the revolutionary change it made in the horror genre
To start of the first thing that I will be analyzing in the quiet place is the most used camera angles. The camera angle that I saw the most in the Quiet Place was the close up shot. This shot was used every time the monsters would come around to capture the fear on the characters faces as they struggle to stay silent. The next most used camera angle was low angle shots when the otherworldly monster would come in to play to seek out their pray. Which makes the viewer feel inferior to the creatures as if they were present within the audience at the cinema.
The next thing I will be analyzing from the quiet place was the camera movement that defined the horror aspect of the film in my opinion. The first camera movement that I saw a lot in the film was the dolly shot. Which was used to show the creepy movements of the monsters as they searched for humans to devour for their cause. Next up is the editing techniques that we're used in the film to make it pop out. The first editing technique that really caught my attention was the cutaways to display the destruction left behind by the monsters when the first came to Earth and throughout the film. The next editing technique in which really set the film apart from other horror films was the continuous switch of audio incorporation. Some scenes would have little to no sound which made the film that much more horrifying.
The components in which I liked most within the Quiet Place was the use of limited sound because it was something unique that was never used before in any other film. If I were to continue in the film making industry I would like to try this technique out in one of my projects. The only thing that I didn't really like about the film was that every time a monster would be near a close up shot would occur. In which I feel took away from some of the horror potential in which the film had. Especially since the cgi that was used to create monsters and their movements really made them as horrifying as possible. Other than that I feel as if I have learned a lot about how to make a good horror film.
