Title Design Research: Halloween
The film I will be analyzing today is Halloween released in 2018 Throughout the opening sequence there were a total of 17 titles put onto to display. The first of those titles were who directed the film and those who worked on the screenplay and screen story for the film. Followed by who helped to executively produce and produce the film for the audience. Then who produced the photography, film design, editing, costumes and music. Next up was the line producer, visual effects supervisor, makeup and hair design
The images used in the title sequence evoked different feelings. Depending on what you focus your attention on you may see the growing pumpkin on the side. You could see this as something that would put you on edge or instill a sense of fear in you. However, in the title designs each one would start out as a bold orange color and flash a blood red before changing over quickly to the next sequenced title. The colors complemented one another well. You could tell by the designs used that this was intended to be a horror/ thriller film. Looking at the title sequence you see the structure and organization of how the titles worked and you knew what to expect yet it still left and unsettle and uneasy feeling after seeing the theme. I began realizing that this is a horror film. The anticipation is what made it that much more interesting and exciting.
The genre is reinforced through the theme colors and the choice in how each title sequence was displayed. For example, the pumpkin started out squashed and mushed into pieces as if to have been stepped on or dropped. As the sequences went on the pumpkin grew with each passing title in the shadows of the background.
Some conventions that are used to help establish to the audience that this is a horror film is the shadows used behind the pumpkin as it continued to reform itself throughout the title sequencing. The color palette was dark and left room for suspense. The background was a little underexposed and that helped created and uneasy feeling. As it is hard to see what is going on with the rest of the mushed pumpkin the title sequences are still on the side to give you those quick flashes averting your attention back to the titles. It is confusing and chaotic which puts my mind in a state of mind that a jump scare just may pop up.
